Mathematics is much more than counting, but involves an understanding of the inherent relationships involved with numbers. Children initially learn to understand quantity and the related numerical symbol with materials that provide a wide opportunity to develop and strengthen counting skills. These include the red and blue rods, the spindle boxes and the skip counting chains. Specific materials are then used to further develop an understanding of how numbers are made from a combination of tens and units. Children can then move to work with the golden beads which allows them to begin work with mathematical operations.
